Rules of the Road for Jersey Shore E-Bikes

Ride on the Correct Side of the Road

Always ride with traffic, never against it.

When crossing the Highlands Bridge, stay on the correct side of the road and use the bike lane.

Stay in Bike Lanes When Available

Use designated bike lanes whenever possible.

If a bike lane is not available, ride as far to the right as is safe and allow cars to pass safely.

Obey Traffic Signals and Signs

Stop at all stop signs and red lights.

Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Signal Your Intentions

Use hand signals when turning or stopping so cars and other cyclists know what you’re doing.

Ride Single File When Necessary

On bridges, narrow roads, or when traffic is heavy, ride in a single line to keep everyone safe.

Be Predictable

Avoid sudden swerves or stops.

Ride in a straight line whenever possible.

No Riding in Unauthorized Areas

Keep sidewalks safe for pedestrians — use the road or bike lanes. If you must remain at very slow speeds.

Do not ride in Hartshorne Woods or other areas where E-Bikes are prohibited.

Yield to Pedestrians, Always

When approaching walkers, joggers, or beachgoers, slow down and give plenty of space.

A friendly bell ring or “on your left” goes a long way.

Be Visible

Wear bright clothing and make sure your e-bike lights are on when riding at dusk, dawn, or night.

Respect the Community

Highlands is a small town that welcomes visitors — show your respect by riding safely, keeping noise down, and treating every ride as if you live here, too.
